Geography: Oceania is a geographical, and often geopolitical, region consisting of numerous lands—mostly islands in the Pacific Ocean and vicinity. Situated between Asia and Antarctica, South America is bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean and on the east by the Pacific Ocean. Oceania is the smallest continent in the world, with an area of about 8,970,000 square kilometers, or almost 6% of the Earth's total land area. Besides, it is also the continent with the least population except Antarctica, constituting 0.5% of the world’s population.
Economy: The economic development in Oceania witnesses significant difference, Australia and New Zealand are economically developed, and other countries lag behind. Crops mainly include wheat, coconut, sugar cane and natural rubber. The animal husbandry mainly relies on sheep breeding, contributing 20% of sheep heads and 40% of wool production for the world. Industry is focused largely on Australia and New Zealand, mainly including mining, steel, nonferrous metals smelting, mechanical manufacturing, chemicals, construction materials, and textiles. The overwhelming majority of people living in Oceania work in the service industry which includes tourism, education and financial services. Oceania's largest export markets include Japan, China, the United States and South Korea. Agriculture and natural resources constitutes only 5% to 10% of Oceania's total jobs, but contributes substantially to export performance.
Rich in: mineral resources mainly includes nickel, bauxite, gold, chrome, phosphate, iron, silver, lead, zinc, coal, petroleum, natural gas, uranium, titanium and struvite; forest and grasslands, respectively accounting for 2% and 16% of total area; fishery resources; biological resources
Short of: The food production in most countries and regions of Oceania is not self-sufficient, requiring to be imported.
