A yellow or orange yellow crystalline powder, hygroscopic. Soluble in water, very slightly soluble in alcohol.

Identification A

Specific absorbance at the maximum is 580-640

Identification B

Examine the chromatograms obtained in the test for related substances. The principal peak in the chromatograms obtained with the test solution is similar in position and approximate size to the principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution

The lower layer shows yellow fluorescence

On treatment with nitric acid and evaporating to dryness on water bath. Ignite residue until it becomes white, dissolve in water and filter. The filtrate gives reaction (a) of sodium and reaction (b) or phosphates.
